Picasso's Muse

The idea for this new piece comes from my first visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, where a series of portraits by Picasso immediately stood out to me. These paintings depict important women in Picasso’s life, and were created over the course of six years. What struck me about this series is how dramatically Picasso’s style and means of expression changed over time. The first painting in the series (Woman Plaiting Her Hair, 1906) is a sensual depiction of a nude woman, while the last painting (Ma Jolie, 1912) has become so abstract and fragmented that the viewer would have no idea of the subject out of context. Seeing the transition between these two extreme examples was inspiring and moving, and I have wanted to write a piece about Picasso’s series ever since.
